Approx. half an hour from Copenhagen is the cathedral city of Roskilde. The
Roskilde cathedral is the resting home of a large number of Danish royals and at the
Viking Ship Museum you can experience five 1000 year old Viking ships which were found in Roskilde Fjord. In the museum harbour are 1:1 copies of the ships which you can try sailing.
In Køge Bay – the area south of Copenhagen – is the six kilometre long Ishøj Beach Park with white sand and high dunes. The exciting
ARKEN Museum of Modern Art is built right next to the Beach Park and further to the south is the old harbour town Køge from which you can sail to Bornholm in the Baltic Sea. Køge's medieval town centre is well-preserved and many of the old houses and farms have been painted in beautiful colours.
A trip to North Zealand is also within reach. In Elsinore you can visit
Kronborg Castle, which - together with the Roskilde Cathedral and the Jelling Mouds – is on the
UNESCO World Heritage List. In Hillerød, you can visit
Frederiksborg Castle and in Humlebaek, overlooking the Oresund, lies the internationally renowned museum
Louisiana with an impressive collection of modern art.
The new Oresund Bridge has further connected the Oresund regions and shortened the journey time between Denmark and Sweden to only 10 minutes. Trains leave Copenhagen's city centre via the bridge with first stop in Malmö/ Sweden and by car, you enter the bridge in Kastrup and enter Sweden just south of Malmö.
