Story of the month: The Devil's Servants – Witchcraft in Vendsyssel
Immerse yourself in a dark and fascinating chapter of Danish history, which tells of witchcraft accusations, fear and destinies in a time full of superstition and mistrust.
The fire blazed, and the whole village had gathered to watch the punishment. For many people accused of witchcraft in Denmark, the court proceedings ended in death at the stake. Between 1536 and 1698, around 2,000 people were accused of witchcraft, and about half of them were sentenced to death at the stake.
This month's story explores the questions behind the accusations: What did one have to do to be accused of being a servant of the devil? Who came under suspicion, and were the circumstances in Vendsyssel different from the rest of the country?
Through storytelling and historical perspectives, insight is provided into the history of witchcraft and the many nuances that characterise this dark but fascinating topic.
The event is for paying guests of the museum.
