The Midgard Serpent in Hobro – by Johnny Haugaard

Experience flower artist Johnny Haugaard’s largest art installation to date. In July and August, a 4 km long Midgard Serpent winds its way over the harbour, through the town and out to the Viking fortress Fyrkat. A must-see!

Head for the GAS Museum in Hobro – because this is where the adventure begins!

Park your car and dive into a magical tale – and discover the mythical creature winding its way through Hobro this summer.

The Midgard Serpent is flower artist Johnny Haugaard’s largest art installation to date. Spanning 4 kilometres in length, the serpent twists and turns above and below ground – and even across rooftops – as it moves through the town.

It rises majestically from the waters of Mariager Fjord and continues along the harbourfront, where it disappears underground in several places. All the way through Hobro and out toward the Viking fortress of Fyrkat, you’ll find spots where you can step inside the serpent – which measures up to 4 metres in diameter at its widest points.

Its head will rise from the ground out at Fyrkat – but remember to start your journey at the GAS Museum to get the full experience of this extraordinary artwork. The Midgard Serpent can be seen in Hobro throughout July and August, with the grand opening taking place on 28 June 2025.

“It shed its skin in Bramslev”

The Midgard Serpent doesn’t leave its mark on Hobro alone. In the hills of Bramslev Bakker, Johnny Haugaard will create the serpent’s “shedded skin” – a tunnel-like installation made from recycled clothing. The piece will be inaugurated during the festival Sommersus i Bakkerne on 21 June in Bramslev Bakker.

So once you’ve experienced the magnificent Midgard Serpent in Hobro, why not make your way to Bramslev Bakker – whether on foot along the Panorama Route, by bike, on board the tour boat Svanen, or by car?
