Lotte Wagner from Dortmund has created illustrations for a multitude of publishers and companies both nationally and internationally over the years. She's known for her character creations and wimmelbilder – those detailed pictures where you can discover countless small stories. With a background teaching silkscreen technique and Design Basics, Wagner has also taken over leadership of the legendary drawing class "Die Rendsburger Zeichnerei" and runs workshops for artists. Her books and illustrations have been published in many languages worldwide.
Ari Plikat, born 1958 in Lüdenscheid, has established himself as one of Germany's best-known cartoonists. His work has been published in prominent media such as Titanic, Stern, taz and Berliner Tagesspiegel. In 2020, he was awarded the Geflügelten Bleistift in bronze at the Deutscher Karikaturenpreis. Plikat's sharp humour and characteristic line have resulted in numerous book publications.
— It's a fantastic opportunity to experience the artists at work. The open studio gives visitors the chance to get close to the creative process and gain insight into how illustrations and cartoons actually come to life, they say at ART56°.
During the nearly two weeks, Wagner and Plikat, who often collaborate on projects, will be working in the studio at the historic harbour, where visitors are welcome to drop by, ask questions and get insight into the two artists' very different but complementary approaches to drawing and illustration.
Hvide Sande has attracted artists from home and abroad in recent years, and the open studio concept gives both locals and tourists the opportunity to encounter art where it's being created – in an informal and accessible setting by the harbour.
