Swedish Modernism in the heart of Odense

At Kunstmuseum Brandts, you can explore Rosa Sejl, an exhibition that traces the breakthrough of Swedish Modernism. With works on loan from Moderna Museet in Stockholm, more than 70 vibrant and narrative paintings, sculptures and photographs from 1900 to the 1940s are presented – a period shaped by both optimism and uncertainty.

When Sweden feels both close and far away
Swedish artists often expressed themselves differently from their Danish contemporaries. Inspired by Matisse and the Parisian art scene, they experimented with bold colours, loose brushstrokes and detailed compositions. Artists such as Sigrid Hjertén, Isaac Grünewald and Hilding Linnqvist are shown in a display that highlights the contrasts – and the connections – between Swedish and Danish art.

Art in context
The exhibition connects past and present through works by contemporary artists such as Karin Mamma Andersson and Carola Grahn, who explore themes like national identity and cultural diversity. Brandts has also produced short films in which artists and researchers share their perspectives on the works.

A place for the whole family
In Spektaklet, the museum’s creative universe for children, families can discover the imaginative world of Swedish art together. There’s space for hands‑on creativity as well as cosy reading corners with beloved Swedish children’s classics.
