The Gudenå Trail is one of Denmark’s most iconic hiking routes, following the winding course of the Gudenå River through the East Jutland landscape. The stretch from the source of the Gudenå to Ry is especially scenic and offers an insight into the river’s beginnings, where small springs come together and slowly grow into one of the country’s most important waterways.

The Gudenå Trail from the Source to Ry

In Vejle Municipality, the experience begins at the source of the Gudenå near Tinnet Krat. Start your hike in a quiet, almost fairytale-like landscape with small springs, woodland and open vistas. At the spring, there is a small platform, allowing you to get close to the very source without getting your feet wet. Enjoy your packed lunch in the nearby picnic shelter, where there is a lovely view.

The route continues through hilly terrain, small villages and beautiful natural areas, with plenty of opportunities to take a short break and enjoy the surroundings.

In the area around the source of the Gudenå, you will find plenty to experience. For example, take a detour to:

  • Rørbæk Sø
  • Tinnet Krat
  • Øster Nykirke and Sct. Peders Helligkilde
  • Tinnetgaard Farm Shop

There are also accommodation options in the area – ranging from shelters and primitive campsites to inns and holiday homes.

Near the Source in the Vejle area, you will find:

  • Danakilde Refugium and Bed & Breakfast
  • Hærvejscenter Kollemorten
  • Riis Feriepark

Map and Practical Information

The stretch is quite remote, so make sure to stock up in Tørring, Rask Mølle, Gudenå Camping and Gl. Rye.

There are four printed maps covering the entire Gudenå Trail from the Source to Randers. They can be picked up in person at the VisitVejle tourist office and provide a good overview of the route, facilities and experiences along the way.
