Fornæs Lighthouse is situated near Grenaa on Djursland and is a striking landmark in the open coastal landscape. Here you’ll find the sea, salt marshes and a historic lighthouse that has guided shipping through the Kattegat for generations.
There has been a lighthouse at Fornæs since 1839, whilst the current lighthouse dates from 1892. The lighthouse is built of Bornholm granite, which was quarried, hewn and shaped with great precision.
Fornæs Lighthouse is well worth a look before you venture further into the countryside. The granite gives the lighthouse a distinctive appearance, and the craftsmanship tells a story of precision and patience.
Fornæs is not an obvious spot for general swimming, as swimming can be risky. However, experienced divers and anglers can enjoy wonderful experiences along the coast when conditions are favourable.
Beneath the surface, the area around Fornæs consists of a hard limestone seabed, which sets it apart from many other Danish coastal dive sites. The limestone seabed provides a breeding ground for seaweed and a diverse marine life.
