Ikast Stenen
Artist: Jørgen Haugen Sørensen
The large two-part sculpture was the first sculpture to be installed in Frisenborg Park. The sculpture is from a period when Jørgen Haugen Sørensen worked extensively with large and heavy formats.
It is characteristic of Jørgen Haugen Sørensen that his sculptures consist of several individual elements rather than a single solid mass. This is also true of The Ikast Stone. It is a fragmented sculpture, threatened by further disintegration. The sculpture exists somewhere between construction and destruction, stability and fragility. These tensions are the strength of the sculpture. Another point of tension lies in the transition between the natural and the crafted. One might associate it with something architectural or with large fossilized creatures. It is both nature and culture at the same time.
The Ikast Stone is regarded as one of Jørgen Haugen Sørensen’s major works. The sculpture is so central to his artistic output that the 20-ton sculpture was transported to England in the mid-1990s for a retrospective exhibition.
