Østre Færge – The Fastest Way to Orø across the Isefjord
Østre Færge operates between Hammer Bakke on the Zealand side and Orø in the Isefjord, providing the quickest connection to the island. With a crossing time of just six minutes and departures roughly every twenty minutes, it is an effortless and frequent ferry service that makes Orø easily accessible to commuters and visitors alike. The distance between the two landing stages is only 685 metres, but the short trip across the narrow sound still gives a clear sense of leaving the mainland behind.
Fast and Frequent Service
Østre Færge operates two ferries, the larger of which, Karen Orø, has capacity for 40 cars and 200 passengers. The ferry runs from early morning until late evening, and the frequent departures mean you rarely need to plan far ahead. For cyclists and pedestrians, the journey is even simpler – you join the queue and arrive on the island minutes later. It is a practical and efficient service that removes any sense that Orø is difficult to reach.
Hammer Bakke – Departure from Zealand
The ferry departs from Hammer Bakke, located north of Holbæk on the eastern shore of the Isefjord. The drive from Copenhagen to Hammer Bakke takes less than an hour, making Orø a realistic destination for a day trip from the capital. There is parking at the ferry landing for those who choose to leave their car and explore the island on foot or by bicycle. Many visitors prefer exactly this, as Orø with its quiet roads and short distances is ideal for cycling.
Orø – the Green Gem of the Isefjord
Orø is one of the most accessible Danish small islands and has preserved its rural character despite its proximity to Holbæk and Copenhagen. The island offers a varied landscape of hills, woods, salt meadows and a long coastline with views across the Isefjord. There is an active local community with a school, shop, church and several eateries, and the island's atmosphere strikes a fine balance between everyday life and holiday mood. Orø is large enough to fill a whole day of exploration, yet small enough that you quickly feel at home.
Nature and Experiences on Orø
The island is known for its rich birdlife, and the salt meadows to the south and west attract waders and geese in large numbers. The landscape alternates between cultivated fields, small patches of woodland and open coastal stretches, and there are marked walking and cycling routes around the island. Orø Harbour on the west side is a charming spot with a small marina and views across the Isefjord towards Holbæk and Tuse Næs. In summer the island hums with visitors enjoying the beaches, eateries and the relaxed island atmosphere.
Alternative Route via Holbæk
In addition to Østre Færge, you can also reach Orø on the Orø-Holbæk ferry, which sails from Holbæk Harbour directly to Orø Harbour on the island's west side. This crossing takes about thirty minutes and offers a more scenic journey across the Isefjord. The two ferry routes complement each other and provide flexibility – you can, for example, arrive via Østre Færge from the east and return via Holbæk from the west, or vice versa.
Experiences in the Area
Holbæk and its surroundings offer plenty of experiences. The town of Holbæk has a lively harbour atmosphere, historic half-timbered houses and the Holbæk Museum. Tuse Næs southwest of Holbæk is known for its farm shops and gentle rolling landscape. To the north lies Odsherred with its painters and Geopark.
