Rosmus Church
Visit Rosmus Church near Balle on Djursland, where Romanesque architecture, local chalk stone and centuries of alterations come together. Inside the church, you can see historical furnishings dating from the Middle Ages onwards.
A medieval church in the open countryside
Rosmus Church is situated in the open countryside near Balle, approximately 14 kilometres south-west of Grenaa. In the Middle Ages, the church was dedicated to Our Lady.
The Romanesque nave is the oldest part of the church and was originally built using local chalkstone, a feature common to many old churches in the area.
Architecture from several periods
The church bears traces of several centuries of alterations. The tower and porch were added in the late Middle Ages, whilst the present chancel was built in 1864.
Note the tower’s broad lower section, the stepped gables and the traces of bricked-up Romanesque windows.
Historical furnishings
Inside, you’ll find a bright church interior with furnishings from various periods. The Romanesque granite baptismal font is adorned with lions, whilst the pulpit dates from the 17th century.
