Siem Church

Siem Church is a small Romanesque village church in Siem near Terndrup. It is a so-called towerless church, consisting of a Romanesque chancel and nave with a newer porch to the south. The oldest part is built from dressed granite blocks, giving the walls a simple and distinctive appearance.

Both of the church’s original doors have been preserved. The south door is still used as the entrance, while the north door has been bricked up. Inside, visitors are welcomed by a bright and simple church interior with a flat ceiling and a preserved round chancel arch from the Romanesque period.

The church furnishings reflect several different periods. The altarpiece from 1951 includes three late Gothic figures from around 1510–1520, probably carved by a North Jutland journeyman from Claus Berg’s workshop. In the centre is Christ as the Man of Sorrows, flanked by Saint Anne with the Virgin and Child and the apostle Andrew.

The Romanesque granite baptismal font is among the oldest objects in the church. The basin is decorated with strongly projecting animal heads, often described as wolf heads. The chalice dates from 1635 and originally came from Store Brøndum Church.

The church was restored in the 1940s and is located at Skørpingvej 29 in Siem, 9575 Terndrup.

Visits: The church is usually closed, but can be visited by arrangement with the church caretaker.
