The City Forest That Has It All

Slagelse Lystskov sits right on the edge of Slagelse and is one of the most popular forests in West Zealand. It is the kind of place where runners meet dog walkers in the morning, families stroll along the wide paths on Sundays, and mountain bikers find technical trails weaving between the trees. The forest covers around 130 hectares, stretching from Slagelse Stadium in the east to the area around Studentersøen lake in the west. Despite its proximity to town, the interior of the forest feels like a different world – dense deciduous woodland, quiet winding paths and a stillness broken only by birdsong and the snap of twigs.

A Forest Rooted in History

The history of Lystskov goes back several centuries, and the forest has always been closely tied to Slagelse. Its name reveals its origins as a pleasure forest – a place where townsfolk would venture out for walks and fresh air. Today the forest is managed by the Danish Nature Agency, and new facilities have been added over the years without sacrificing its tranquil character. Old beech trees stand beside younger plantations, and in spring the forest floor is carpeted with white and blue anemones. The path network is well maintained, and several routes are signposted, making it easy to find your way even on a first visit.

Studentersøen – the Blue Heart of the Forest

In the western part of Lystskov lies Studentersøen, a small forest lake surrounded by tall trees and dense vegetation. The lake is a popular destination for a quiet stroll, and benches along the shore invite you to sit and listen to nature. The water attracts ducks and grey herons, and in summer dragonflies dart across the surface. From Studentersøen you can follow paths north into the higher ground or south into the more open woodland landscape.

Mountain Biking, Dog Forest and Shelters

Slagelse Lystskov is not just a forest for quiet walks. Here you will find a well-built mountain bike trail that winds through the trees with technical sections, jumps and bends – a genuine challenge for cyclists of all levels. Runners use the forest paths for training all year round, and the varied terrain with hills and flat stretches offers excellent conditions. For dog owners there is a fenced-off dog forest where your pet can run free among the trees. The forest also has a shelter area with a fire pit, offering the chance to spend a night under the open sky close to town.

A Forest for Every Season

The character of Lystskov changes markedly with the seasons. Spring brings anemones and birdsong, summer provides dense canopy and shade on the warmest days, autumn paints the forest in gold and red, and winter opens up the views between the bare trunks. No matter when you visit, the atmosphere invites you to slow down. On weekdays in particular you can walk long stretches without meeting another soul – the forest is large enough to absorb even the busiest weekends.

Experiences Nearby

From Slagelse Lystskov it is only a short walk to Slagelse town centre with its shops, cafés and cultural attractions. The Viking history of Trelleborg lies just a few kilometres away, and on the coast at Korsør the Great Belt awaits with its harbourfront and views of the bridge. Head north and the landscape opens up around Tissø, Zealand’s largest lake, with hiking trails and birdwatching. For more inspiration on things to do in West Zealand, visit destinationsjaelland.dk.
