Slagelse Lystanlæg – a green retreat with an island in the lake

In the heart of Slagelse lies one of West Zealand's most charming parks. Slagelse Lystanlæg – known locally as simply "Anlægget" – is the kind of place that makes you slow down and breathe. Morning walkers share the paths with families carrying picnic baskets, joggers weave between the old trees, and children race around the playground with that particular brand of energy only parks can inspire.

A park with soul and history

The park first opened in 1882, designed by landscape architect Ove Høegh Hansen, and has since become the most important green space in Slagelse Municipality. It was expanded in 1911-12, and in 1953 a rose garden and new lake were added. The result is a mature landscape park with a character that newer parks rarely achieve – tall, slender beech trees alternate with dense shrubbery, and old willow trees lean out over the water with branches that nearly touch their own reflections.

The Island in the Lake

The park's most iconic feature is the large lake with its island – known locally as "Øen i Søen" (The Island in the Lake). This small green island sits like a little fairytale in the middle of the water, lending the park an almost romantic atmosphere. Along the shore, reeds and water lilies grow, and ducks and coots make their home here year-round. A smaller lake with a fountain in the southern part of the park adds yet another layer of tranquillity, surrounded by rhododendron bushes that bloom in early summer.

Playground, labyrinth and art

For families with children, Anlægget is an ideal outing. The playground is well-maintained and popular, and the beech hedge labyrinth is a classic – kids love racing through the hedgerows while adults enjoy a coffee on one of the nearby benches. Scattered throughout the park you will also find art installations that invite both wonder and conversation. Wildlife is plentiful – squirrels dart between branches, and woodpeckers tap away at the old trunks.

Acciseboden – a piece of Slagelse history

In a corner of the park stands Acciseboden, a small building from 1798 that was reconstructed in 1928. This was once the home of the consumption officer, who collected the accise – a tax on foodstuffs, fuel and building materials brought into the town of Slagelse. The building offers a fine glimpse into the city's trading history and gives the park a cultural dimension beyond its purely recreational appeal.

Experiences near Slagelse Lystanlæg

Slagelse has much more to offer beyond the park. Trelleborg Viking Fortress lies just outside the city and is one of Denmark's best-preserved ring fortresses from the Viking Age. The town centre of Slagelse features cosy streets with cafés and shops, and from Korsør – just a fifteen-minute drive west – you can experience the Great Belt Bridge up close and stroll along the harbour. Nature lovers can explore Skælskør Nor to the south or take a cycling trip along the Marguerite Route through the West Zealand countryside. Slagelse Lystanlæg is freely accessible year-round and conveniently located near Slagelse Station and the town centre. Parking is available at Slagelse Stadium on Parkvej. Bring a book, let the children play, or simply sit on a bench and enjoy the moment.
