When engine roars fill the streets of Skælskør
On the last Friday in May, the small harbour town of Skælskør transforms into a massive open-air car show when Drengerøvsaften takes over the streets. It is Denmark's largest motor gathering of its kind, and you can feel it. Up to 20,000 people flock to the town to admire around 1,000 vehicles – from gleaming American muscle cars and thundering motorcycles to nostalgic vintage cars and mighty tractors – lined up along the harbour quay and through the town centre.
Drengerøvsaften is rooted in the simple joy of looking at cool cars and meeting like-minded people. The concept is straightforward: owners drive their pride and joy into town, park up and open the bonnet. The rest takes care of itself. Spontaneous conversations spring up over engine blocks, children climb into tractor cabs, and teenagers take selfies in front of painted hot rods. It is the opposite of exclusive – everyone is welcome, and the atmosphere is relaxed and down-to-earth.
More than just cars
Although the vehicles are the centrepiece, the evening offers much more. Skælskør's shops stay open late, and along the harbour and in the streets the air is filled with the aroma of street food from the many stalls. There is live music from local bands, and children can entertain themselves with the many activities spread across the entire event area. The atmosphere builds slowly through the evening, culminating in a spectacular fireworks display over the harbour late at night – a sight that alone makes the trip worthwhile.
For many families, Drengerøvsaften has become a fixed tradition. It is the kind of evening where grandparents tell stories about their first car while the grandchildren are more fascinated by a lowrider with hydraulics. It is generations meeting over a shared fascination with anything that has an engine and wheels.
Skælskør as the setting
It is no coincidence that Drengerøvsaften works so well in Skælskør. The compact town centre with its cobblestone streets and picturesque harbour creates a backdrop that no designed car park can match. The vehicles are literally parked with a view of the fjord, and the light from the sunset over Skælskør Inderfjord casts a warm glow over the gleaming paintwork. The town is the perfect size for the event – large enough to accommodate thousands of visitors, yet small enough to maintain an intimate atmosphere.
The organisers recommend parking at Skælskør Hallen and walking the 15-20 minutes to the harbour. For those who prefer more stylish transport, vintage shuttle buses run between the car park and the exhibition.
