Esbjerg Ensemble’s New Year’s Concert with Den Ny Opera

Esbjerg Ensemble kicks off 2027 with its traditional New Year’s concert, held this year in collaboration with Den Ny Opera. Tenor Jonathan Koppel and soprano Sofie Lund join the ensemble on stage.

Jonathan Koppel, tenor

Jonathan Koppel is a fourth-generation member of the Koppel family of musicians. His great-grandfather was the composer and pianist Herman D. Koppel.

Jonathan Koppel made his debut at the Royal Danish Theatre in 2022 in Shostakovich’s opera “The Nose.” Before that, he sang Fenton in Verdi’s “Falstaff” with Den Ny Opera at Musikhuset Esbjerg. In 2024, he returned to Esbjerg as Prince Tamino in Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” – a role he has since also sung at the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm, the Royal Danish Theatre and the Danish National Opera.

His operetta repertoire includes Feri in “The Csárdás Princess,” Camille de Rosillon and St. Brioche in “The Merry Widow,” Dr. Blind in “Die Fledermaus” and the title role in “Hjerter i Valsetakt.”

Sofie Lund, soprano

Sofie Lund trained at the Opera Academy of the Royal Danish Academy of Music and the Royal College of Music in London and has performed on stages throughout Europe.

From 2023 to 2025, she was a member of the ensemble at Pfalztheater Kaiserslautern in Germany, where she sang both leading and supporting roles. In Denmark, her roles have included Norina in Donizetti’s “Don Pasquale” at the Royal Danish Theatre and Violetta in Verdi’s “La Traviata” at the Danish National Opera.

She made her debut with Den Ny Opera in Esbjerg in 2021 as Nanetta in Verdi’s “Falstaff” and has since sung the Wagner roles of Woglinde in “Götterdämmerung” and the Voice of the Woodbird in “Siegfried.”
