Shelters with space, tranquillity and lake views

Himmelsøen’s shelter site features three spacious shelters, each accommodating up to six people. The shelters are positioned around 50 metres apart, offering both privacy and plenty of space, and all are oriented directly towards the lake.

Here, you can fall asleep to the gentle sound of the water and wake up to views across the calm surface of the lake.

Swimming area, lake and open landscape

The shelters are located directly beside a purpose-built bathing area by the 22-hectare Himmelsøen lake. The lake and its surroundings were formerly a gravel extraction site, now transformed into an attractive area for nature and outdoor recreation.

The area is rich in birdlife and invites relaxation, swimming and outdoor stays in an open landscape. Fishing is permitted in parts of the lake, though not within 100 metres on either side of the bathing area.

Outdoor activities and nearby facilities

Close to the shelter site you will find a fire pit, picnic tables and a toilet building, making your stay comfortable for families, hikers and small groups. Paths around the lake are suitable for walking, cycling and horse riding.

The Himmelsøen area forms part of “Milen”, Roskilde’s nearby recreational and cultural landscape, where nature and active experiences are easily accessible.

Easy access and flexible booking

There is a large gravel parking area approximately 100 metres from the shelter site, as well as designated accessible parking around 50 metres away, close to the beach.

Overnight stays are free of charge and available on a first come, first served basis. The shelters can also be booked via Friluftsguiden, which gives priority access upon presentation of a booking confirmation. Booking requires creating a user profile on the website.
