When art opens its doors at Whitsun
Every year at Whitsun, Central and West Zealand transforms into one vast open-air gallery as Kunst i Pinsen invites visitors into more than a hundred studios, workshops and exhibition spaces. From Holbæk in the north to Slagelse in the south and Kalundborg to the west, artists open their private workspaces and reveal what usually stays hidden behind closed doors. It is a rare chance to experience art where it is actually made – among half-finished canvases, kilns and potter's wheels.
The encounter between artist and visitor
What makes Kunst i Pinsen truly special is the direct encounter between artist and audience. There are no middlemen here, no white-cube galleries with wine receptions and discreet price tags. Instead, you step straight into the room where the ceramicist shapes her vessels, the glass artist blows his sculptures and the painter stands with brush in hand. The artists are happy to talk about their processes, techniques and sources of inspiration, and in many places you can try your own hand at materials and tools. For families with children, it is a wonderful opportunity to let the little ones experiment with clay, paint or textiles while the adults enjoy conversation with the artists.
Seven municipalities united by creativity
Kunst i Pinsen stretches across seven municipalities in the heart of Zealand: Slagelse, Sorø, Kalundborg, Holbæk, Lejre, Ringsted and Roskilde. This impressive geographical span reflects the artistic wealth of the region. The route can be planned to suit your particular interest – if ceramics appeal, you will find a cluster of workshops around Sorø and Dianalund. If painting and graphics draw you in, there are strong artistic communities in Holbæk and along the Kalundborg coast. Jewellery, textiles, weaving, sculpture and photography are also represented, and many artists work at the intersection of several disciplines.
An art experience in the Zealand landscape
The drive between studios is an experience in itself. The roads wind through the rolling moraine landscape, past half-timbered farmsteads, open fields and small villages with fieldstone churches. Many studios are housed in converted barns, former dairies or set in the midst of nature with views over lakes and fjords. Kunst i Pinsen takes place over the Whitsun weekend, typically from Saturday to Monday, and most exhibitors are open from late morning until late afternoon. A free app and a printed map make it easy to navigate between the many venues and put together your own personal route.
More than just looking at art
Although art is the centrepiece, the weekend is also about enjoying the good life. Several studios serve home-baked cake and coffee in the garden, and the atmosphere is relaxed and informal. It is the kind of experience where you plan to pop in at one place and end up spending the entire day driving from studio to studio, the car full of wrapped ceramic vases and your head full of new impressions. For couples without children, it makes for a perfect slow weekend where art can be combined with walks in nature and lunch at a local inn.
Experiences nearby
Central and West Zealand offers far more than art over the Whitsun weekend. Sorø with its historic abbey church and beautiful lakes is an obvious stop, as is Trelleborg near Slagelse, where the Viking ring fortress still commands attention. Kalundborg impresses with its unique five-towered church, and Holbæk Harbour buzzes with cafés and views across the fjord. Nature lovers can explore Åmosen, Denmark's largest bog, or walk along the shores of Lake Tissø.
