Murals Listed in Denmark’s Cultural Canon

Undløse Church holds one of Denmark’s most remarkable art treasures. The church’s lime murals, created by the anonymous Union Master around 1400, are included in the Danish Cultural Canon – the official list of the most important works of Danish cultural heritage. This makes this small village church near Holbæk one of the most art-historically significant sites in all of West Zealand.

The church stands on the western edge of Undløse, a quiet village between Holbæk and Tølløse in the rolling mid-Zealand landscape. From a distance, the distinctive tower catches the eye, and the whitewashed facade signals a classic Danish village church. But behind the modest exterior walls lies an interior that takes most visitors’ breath away.

A Church with Roots in the 12th Century

The oldest parts of Undløse Church date back to the 12th century, when it was built as a Romanesque fieldstone church. The floor plan follows the traditional long-house form, where nave and chancel are united in one long room – a building style common in medieval Danish parish churches. In the late Gothic period, the church was extended with a tower to the west and a porch that today serves as the main entrance.

Around 1500, the original Romanesque chancel was replaced by a larger Gothic chancel, and a sacristy was added on the north side of the choir. During a comprehensive restoration in the 1950s, older window and door traces were reconstructed, so the church today presents an authentic appearance that respects the building’s many layers of history.

The Universe of the Union Master

It is the lime murals that truly set Undløse Church apart. The Union Master – an unknown artist named after the Kalmar Union – decorated the nave’s vaults with scenes from the life of Jesus, from birth to resurrection. The paintings cover the entire walls and vaults of the nave in a cohesive pictorial programme that, in its narrative joy and detailed execution, ranks among the finest examples of late medieval Danish wall art.

The vaults date from the period 1400 to 1425 and encompass three major decoration phases. The colours are surprisingly well preserved, and the light from the Gothic windows casts a soft glow over the scenes, giving the space an almost meditative atmosphere.

Furnishings from Renaissance and Baroque

Beyond the murals, Undløse Church houses a rich collection of furnishings from later periods. The Romanesque baptismal font from the 12th century is one of the church’s oldest objects, bearing witness to the earliest Christian practice in the parish. The altarpiece from 1644, executed in the auricular baroque style, dominates the chancel wall with its carved figures and gilded details.

The pulpit from 1643 bears the signature of Abel Schrøder, one of the most respected cabinetmakers of his time from Næstved, and is worth a visit in its own right. Along the walls hang epitaphs and memorial tablets from the 17th and 18th centuries, telling the stories of the people and families who shaped the parish over the centuries.

Experiences in the Area

Undløse is centrally located in Holbæk Municipality, a short distance from both Holbæk town and Tølløse. The area offers beautiful walks in the rolling Zealand landscape, and the nature around the Åmosen area to the south is one of Northern Europe’s most important wetlands. To the north lies Holbæk Fjord with opportunities for kayaking and coastal fishing.

For families with children, the open-air museum Andelslandsbyen Nyvang nearby is a popular excursion destination, where you can experience rural life in early 20th-century Denmark. Find more experiences and inspiration for your trip at destinationsjaelland.dk.
