Ansgar's Church, urban church

Ansgars Church is located beside Ansgar Park, just south of Odense city centre. With its freestanding bell tower, red-brick architecture and prominent setting, it is one of the city's most distinctive landmarks. Consecrated in 1902, it was the first new church to be built in Odense since the Middle Ages.

Ansgars Church was built at a time when Odense was undergoing rapid growth. Industrialisation brought new residents to the city, creating the need for a new parish church. It was named after Ansgar, the missionary credited with bringing Christianity to Denmark and the wider Nordic region.

Designed by architect Niels Jacobsen, the church is a striking example of early 20th-century church architecture. Built in red brick with granite details, its rounded arches and solid proportions give it a distinctive and harmonious appearance.

Look out for the details

The freestanding bell tower is one of the church's most recognisable features and can be seen from much of the surrounding area along Søndre Boulevard. Above the main entrance, sandstone reliefs created by sculptor Thomas Bærentzen add artistic character to the exterior.

Inside, visitors can admire a number of notable artworks, including the altarpiece by Axel Poulsen and frescoes by Niels Skovgaard. Together, they contribute to the calm and atmospheric character of the church interior.

Between the city and green surroundings

Surrounded by green spaces, Ansgars Church forms part of a peaceful area together with Ansgar Park and the nearby Assistens Cemetery, just a short walk from the city centre. Here, history, architecture and nature come together in a part of Odense that not every visitor discovers.

The park, the historic setting and the striking church building make the area a worthwhile stop on a walk through the city. The church remains an active part of the local community and hosts concerts and other cultural events throughout the year.
