Holiday fun for children and families at Marstal Søfartsmuseum

Set your imagination free in the maritime museum's basement workshop

During the Danish school holidays, children and their grown-ups can build small wooden ships from recycled materials at Marstal Søfartsmuseum.

Using sticks, fabric, cardboard and old screw tops, you’ll be hammering, gluing and drawing, giving each ship its own unique character. Once your ship is finished, you can launch it in the outdoor basin.

Whether you build a classic wooden vessel or a quirky, colourful model made from recycled materials, there’s plenty of hands-on fun with tools and materials in a cosy setting.

More child-friendly activities at the museum

In the museum’s maritime activity book, the "søfartsbog", you’ll meet your new friend Anker. Together you solve small tasks as you explore the museum, learning more about ships and seafaring along the way. You can even get a tattoo and a new name – just like real sailors when they’re at sea!

When you have finished exploring the museum, you can board the Martha, a play ship moored safely in the museum courtyard. The museum courtyard also features a playground where you can try your hand at maritime life; for example, you can climb a tall mast and look out over the "world".

All activities are free once the admission fee has been paid.
