Lookout Towers in Lille Vildmose
Experience the breathtaking nature from Lille Vildmose's many lookout towers. Visit the Høstemarkt Tower, where you can enjoy the view over Høstemark Moor. Here, you might spot golden eagles or observe red deer grazing in the area.
Also visit the Brandvagt Tower, where you can enjoy an impressive view over the moor. To the west, you can see the old coastline at Kællingbjerg Klint, and to the east, the Mulbjerge rise near the Kattegat. The water-filled ditches attract a rich birdlife, and there are good chances of spotting elk.
The Birkesø Pavilion is located by the restored Birkesø, where you can look out over the lake's bird islands from the pavilion. Display boards provide information about the diverse birdlife.
The Tofte Sø Tower offers views over Tofte Lake, which was restored in 1973 after being drained for over 200 years. Here, you can observe the cormorant colony and perhaps spot sea eagles or otters hunting. There are also good opportunities to see red deer by the lake.
From the Toftetårnet, you can view the Enebærsletten, one of the best places to witness the red deer during the rutting season. A path from the parking lot at the public beach leads through a tunnel under the Coastal Road to the tower.
Boardwalks
Explore Portland Moor on a 1.1 km long boardwalk, named after the Aalborg Portland cement factory, which purchased the raised bog in 1919 to extract peat for fuel. At the large excavation site, you'll find a viewing platform where you can enjoy the sight of geese, swans, and ducks.
You can explore Tofte Moor by following a boardwalk built directly on the moor surface. Start at the parking lot at Tofte Lake and follow the North Sea Trail southwest along the edge of Tofte Moor. A staircase leads you over the wildlife fence, and the boardwalk provides access to Tofte Moor, the largest lowland raised bog in Northwestern Europe.
Viewpoints and Platforms
Enjoy your brought coffee at the Kaffepletten, a small platform located at the northern end of Portland Moor's large excavation area. You can reach the Kaffepletten by following the gravel path west from the northernmost parking lot on Ny Høstemarkvej.
Take in the stunning view over Lille Vildmose from Kællingbjerg Klint. A footpath leads you from Vildmosevej through Portland Moor to the top of the cliff. Kællingbjerg Klint was once part of Denmark's old coastline before the raised bog formed. The sea used to reach the foot of the cliff, where wind and waves exposed the white chalk.
The Mellemområdet
Don't miss a walk in the Mellemområdet, a central part of the large nature reserve, which was previously used for agriculture but is now being restored to recreate the natural raised bog and increase biodiversity. The area stretches between the northern and southern parts of Lille Vildmose and serves as a transition zone between the untouched raised bog and the surrounding lowland moors and cultivated landscapes. Here, you will find important habitats for rare species such as red deer, elk, wild boar, and birds of prey, which thrive in the varied landscape.
