Knowledge and culture in the heart of Aarhus

The Festival of the Century is an annual festival of knowledge and culture that transforms Aarhus into a vibrant stage for conversation, reflection and experiences. Over ten days in March, the festival invites you to attend lectures, performances, concerts and debate events featuring some of Denmark’s most exciting communicators, researchers and artists.

The festival is organised by the Folkeuniversitetet in collaboration with a wide range of cultural institutions, libraries and educational establishments, and each year centres on a new theme.

Theme for 2027: FREEDOM

In 2027, the Festival of the Century will focus on the theme of FREEDOM. Freedom has been fought for in revolutions, enshrined in constitutions and celebrated in art and music. From slave revolts and the women’s rights movement to freedom of expression and democracy, people throughout history have fought for the right to have a say. But freedom has never been simple. It has always come at a price – and had its limits. The festival explores the struggles, ideas and dreams that have shaped our understanding of a free life.

At the same time, we shine a spotlight on today’s dilemmas: surveillance, technology, war, climate change, misinformation and global crises that challenge our notions of freedom. What is freedom today?

The programme is wide-ranging and offers both thought-provoking insights and sensory experiences. The festival’s events take place at various venues across Aarhus – from large stages and auditoriums to libraries, museums and the city’s cultural centres.
