Hørup Kirke

The church towers high above Kirke Hørup, and if the legend is true, the events surrounding its construction gave the village and fishing village their names.

Romanesque whitewashed granite block church with Gothic additions. Separate belfry. Pulpit from 1576. Piscina in the choir. Tympanum over the walled-up women's door.

Normally the church is only open within the mentioned hours if staff is working that day.

It is unknown when the church was built, but legend has it that the underground played a role in its location, as the church was originally supposed to be closer to the coast and the vicarage.

What was built during the day was torn down during the night, and when the workers arrived in the morning, they heard a voice saying: ‘Høger up, høger up’ (Higher up, higher up). This happened several times until they began building on the hilltop, where the church stands today. The village was named Kirke Hørup, and the fishing village is now called Høruphav.
