Maderne is part of the Præstø Fjord Wildlife Reserve and is a very important bird habitat. For this reason, many birdwatchers also head to Roneklint when migratory birds make their way towards Inderfjorden, Feddet or Maderne. Maderne is a barrier formation that consists of an approximately 3-metre-high vegetation-covered ridge in the east, while the western part is a broader, low-lying salt meadow. Sheltered behind Maderne is a small lagoon.
