Art in an Old Dairy Building near Slagelse

Between the flat fields and quiet country roads west of Slagelse lies Kirke Stillinge — one of those Danish villages you might easily drive through without guessing what hides behind its facades. Behind the unassuming entrance to the old dairy on Støvlebækvej, MØLLER i Mejeriet has created an art gallery unlike anything else in the area. There are no white cubic walls or sterile exhibition rooms here. Instead, you step into a world where art meets industrial history and the scent of old timber and whitewashed walls provides the backdrop for a surprisingly rich selection of Danish art and craftsmanship.

From Dairy to Gallery

The building has a past as a working dairy, and that history is still palpable everywhere. The four rooms, which together make up a good 300 square metres, each have their own character — from the large, light-filled main hall to more intimate corners where old dairy installations have become natural sculptures woven into the exhibition. The thick walls keep the rooms pleasantly cool in summer and cosy in winter, and light falls through the original window openings to bathe the exhibited works in a soft, natural glow. It is a space where the building's history and the art reinforce each other rather than compete.

Thirty Artists Under One Roof

MØLLER i Mejeriet collaborates with artists from across Denmark and always presents a broad selection of paintings, glass art, and ceramics. This is not a gallery showing a handful of works by a single artist — at any given time it houses pieces by at least thirty different artists, offering a diversity of expression, technique, and price range that you would normally have to visit a larger city to find. Whether you are looking for a large painting for the living room or a small ceramic bowl as a gift, there is something to fall in love with. The staff are happy to gift-wrap purchases, and gift vouchers are available for those who would rather let the recipient choose.

A Place to Breathe

The atmosphere in the old dairy is deliberately relaxed. You are welcomed with a cup of coffee and can wander through the rooms at your own pace, linger over the works, return to something you spotted in the previous room, or simply sit down for a moment and let the impressions sink in. There are no sales assistants hovering at your heels and no expectation that you need to buy anything. It is precisely this understated hospitality that makes a visit feel more like dropping in on a good friend's studio than walking through a commercial gallery. For couples, it offers a cultural change of pace from the beach, and for families with older children a gallery visit can be surprisingly inspiring.

Location and Experiences in the Area

Kirke Stillinge is just a few minutes' drive west of Slagelse, a town that is itself well worth a visit thanks to the Viking fortress of Trelleborg, the historic town centre, and the proximity to the Great Belt Bridge. The nearby harbour town of Korsør offers maritime atmosphere and beaches, while the surrounding countryside invites exploration on foot or by bike through the gentle landscape of south-west Zealand.
