Flood column on Mandø

Many times over the centuries, the sea has washed in over Mandø. The current flood column was erected in 1959. It is crowned with a bronze wreath with the initials of the four corners of the world.

In October 1634, the Danish part of the Wadden Sea was hit by a storm and subsequent storm surge that changed the coast forever. The water level was 6.3 meters above normal and it is estimated that between 8,000 and 15,000 people drowned during the storm that hit the entire west coast of Jutland.
