Gisseløre – Where Kalundborg Fjord Opens Up for the Angler

Gisseløre sits on the western side of Kalundborg, where Kalundborg Fjord meets the open Great Belt. It is one of those spots along the West Zealand coast where nature and town life almost touch – from the car park it is just a few steps down to the water, yet it feels as though you are a world away from everything. The fjord spreads out before you with views across to the Asnæs peninsula on the opposite shore and the Great Belt Bridge in the distance.

Blue Flag and Fjord Beach

Gisseløre holds Blue Flag status, meaning water quality is closely monitored and meets strict international standards. The beach itself is a typical fjord beach with a mix of sand and stones, and there is room to spread out with towels and picnic baskets. A public bathing jetty stretches into the water, making it easy to reach swimming depth even when the tide is low. Toilets and picnic benches are nearby, so the area works well as a setting for a full day by the water – whether you have come to fish, swim or simply enjoy the view.

The seabed off Gisseløre is varied with stretches of sand, stone and kelp, and the current conditions in the fjord ensure clear, fresh water for most of the year. For families with children, the shallow areas close to the beach are perfect for wading and playing, while the more adventurous can swim out from the jetty.

Fishing in the Fjord

It is the fishing that has truly put Gisseløre on the map among Zealand's coastal anglers. The fjord mouth creates natural current conditions that draw sea trout, garfish and flatfish close to shore. Sea trout is the main target for most, and bright fish are caught here from early spring through to late autumn. The reef and rocky stretches along the coast provide natural hideouts for baitfish and crustaceans, which in turn attract the larger predators. Garfish appear in shoals as water temperatures rise, and flatfish are best caught on the sandy patches between the stones.

For spin fishers, the coast is ideal – you can wade out onto the shallower sections and cover a wide area with your casts. Fly fishers also find good conditions here, especially in moderate wind when the current carries food along the shoreline. It is the kind of spot where you easily lose track of time, because there is always a chance of the next strike just one more cast away.

Close to Town yet Wonderfully Remote

One of Gisseløre's great advantages is its location. The town of Kalundborg with its shops, cafés and cultural offerings is literally just around the corner. The distinctive five-towered church, one of Kalundborg's most famous landmarks, rises above the town just a few kilometres away. Yet Gisseløre has a tranquillity that feels far removed from the bustle of the town. The landscape around the fjord beach is open with low hills and fields in the background, and birdlife is rich – cormorants, oystercatchers and gulls are permanent residents, and during migration seasons you can spot waders and ducks along the shore.

Experiences Nearby

Beyond Kalundborg itself, there is plenty to explore in the area. The Røsnæs peninsula with its dramatic cliff landscape lies to the northwest and offers fantastic walks with panoramic views across the belt. Asnæs Rev on the opposite side of the fjord is another outstanding fishing spot for the dedicated coastal angler.
