The Populace at ARoS

A comprehensive installation with depth

In The Populace, ARoS's new Salling Gallery is transformed into a theatrical universe where Beier and Miller focus sharply on the relationship between object and viewer. A large number of mannequins are arranged in groups and confronted with faceless portraits – a visual staging that evokes associations with consumer goods, mass production and social structures. The exhibition prompts reflection on what makes something “original” and how power dynamics are created in art and everyday life.

The Populace offers a different kind of art experience: not just seeing art, but standing in the middle of its ‘scene’ and feeling like both an actor and an observer.

Themes and artists

• In her practice, Nina Beier explores how recognisable everyday objects – in this case mannequins – can carry complex meanings about identity, value and reproduction.
• John Miller contributes a contrasting energy, combining the tradition of portraiture with a critical commentary on consumption and mass production. The exhibition moves between contemporary criticism and formal play, evoking a subtle but powerful dialogue between the artwork and the audience.
