Hiking at Rands Fjord

The protected natural area of Rands Fjord, located north of Fredericia, is a fantastic destination for an excursion. The fjord has been transformed into a freshwater lake through embankment and is today especially known for its beautiful nature and rich bird and wildlife.

You can use the area’s network of marked trails, which start from small parking and rest areas along the outskirts of Rands Fjord. Here you will also find information boards with an overview of hiking routes. You can read more about the hiking routes at Rands Fjord here!

Experience beautiful nature near Fredericia

The landscape around Rands Fjord is a hilly terrain with small forests, grazing areas, cultivated fields, and steep valley slopes with deciduous woodland. The fjord area, which was reclaimed in the 19th century, features several streams, wet meadows, and marshlands.

Several elevated viewpoints offer stunning views over the lake, and on clear days you can see as far as Trelde Næs and the Little Belt. Kiselguhr was previously extracted at Rands Fjord, and the former extraction sites have now been transformed into small lakes.

A hiking route with rich wildlife in the heart of Nature Park Lillebælt

Along the many hiking trails, it is possible to experience the wildlife of Rands Fjord, and the varied landscape provides opportunities to observe many breeding bird species. Rands Fjord is a permanent breeding site for white-tailed eagles, which use the area as their hunting grounds.

It is a remarkable sight to see the large white-tailed eagles, with a wingspan of up to 240 cm, gliding over the fjord to mark their territory. The eagles are often seen from the cemetery near the nearby Egeskov Church or from one of the two birdwatching towers.

Rands Fjord is located within Nature Park Lillebælt, Denmark’s largest nature park.

Birdwatching towers at Rands Fjord

If you are looking for particularly good birdwatching opportunities, you can use one of the two birdwatching towers at Rands Fjord. The birdwatching tower The Grebe Birdwatching Tower is located by the fjord itself, while the Bearded Reedling Birdwatching Tower is located at Spang Å. Together, the two towers provide the opportunity to experience the birdlife from different perspectives.

Shelter sites at Rands Fjord

The area now also offers two shelter sites, the Rands Fjord shelter site and the shelter and tent site at Fagerlien, where you can stay close to nature and continue experiencing the bird and wildlife of Rands Fjord as the day comes to an end.

Fishing in Rands Fjord

Fishing in Rands Fjord is not permitted without permission from the landowner. Instead, fishing is possible in the stream Spang Å here.
